Whilst Christmas is a time that many of us enjoy spending time together with family and friends, for many, it is a time of year that brings much heartache.
As Family Lawyers, we generally see a spike of inquiries before the Christmas period from parents who wish to spend time with their Children over the holidays and also, following Christmas, from those parents who were to spend time with their Children over the holiday period, but the other parent did not allow such time.
Further, Christmas is a time where the financial stress of the holiday spending can cause havoc in relationships and we usually witness increased rates of separation and domestic violence.
So what does this mean for us as members of our community?
Be aware of the circumstances of others. Just because your family, “has it altogether” does not mean the same for others in your community.
Keep an eye out for those in need and if you have concerns, ask someone how they are going. During the Christmas period, it can be difficult for persons to obtain legal advice due to the closure of Law Firms and the Courts, however, the immediate response should be to protect those in need and to assist them in seeking help, whether that be financial assistance or to discuss their concerns with a professional. Some organisations which may be able to assist over the Christmas period, depending on the needs of the individual, include:
DV Connect 1800 811 811
Salvation Army 13 72 58
